About 'motor'-Dodge Neon Motor Mounts?
I have recently written an article on simple language stimulation techniques for toddlers. I was able to get in some basic information but there is just simply so much out there when it comes to speech and language that I'd like to break it down in a few articles in order to delve in more deeply with my explanations. This article will focus on oral motor exercises you can do with your child to work on increasing the strength of the muscles in your child's mouth and tongue which are needed for speech production. Some children I have worked with in the field of Early Intervention have had delayed language that may have been affected by their overall oral tone, basically just meaning that the muscle tone in the mouth and tongue was rather low. These are the two-year-old children who tend to still drool even when they are not teething, and often have their mouths open throughout the day. Oral motor exercises will most definitely help the child with low muscle tone, but these exercises are not just for these children. They are beneficial to all children. The more pronounced the muscles of the mouth and tongue are, the easier it will be for your child to move the tongue and lips around in order to string sounds together in formation of a word. Bubbles tend to be an all-time favorite activity for toddlers. You can have them try to blow bubbles themselves with the bubble wand. In the bathtub, you can have your toddler bend down and attempt to blow bubbles in the water. Straw use is a great oral motor exercise and there are so many ways to use one! You can use your straw to blow the bubbles mentioned above, whether it be to blow from the straw onto the bubble wand, or whether it be to use the straw in the bathtub to blow bubbles in the water. You can use a straw to blow bubbles in a cup. You can also place something very lightweight, such as a cotton ball, or crumpled up paper, onto the floor and use the straw to blow it. You can have fun with this, making a marker that you and your child have to reach, making a kind of race out of it. Children tend to like to blow out of the straw and into my face during my therapy sessions with them, too. They'll blow and I'll make funny faces in response which makes them laugh and blow some more. Keep in mind, too, that these blowing activities can be done without a straw, but using a straw will allow for your child to close their lips around it. This may be an easier way to teach them how to blow, and also helps to build on the muscles of the mouth. Blowing through a straw is great, but so is sucking through a straw. You can have your child use a straw to suck substances that are more difficult, such as yogurt, maybe apple sauce or a milkshake. If these substances are more difficult to suck, then your child will have to use these muscles even more to get what they are wanting. Working the tongue is great, too. You can stick your tongue out and see if your child will imitate you. Stick it up and down, to one side, and then to the other. If you have a lollipop or a Popsicle, you can hold it, showing your child how they can stick their tongue out to lick it. This works great when there is something stuck to a spoon, too, like ice cream. If you have something sticky, such as jelly, you can place a small amount somewhere on your child's lip and see if they will lick it off. Again, the more pronounced the muscles of the mouth and tongue are, the easier it will be for your child to move the tongue and lips around in order to string sounds together in formation of a word. These exercises tend to be fun, and they will help to strengthen those much-needed muscles. |
