About 'starter motor replacement cost'-Cutting the Cost: Do it Yourself: Automotive Repair
"Woman's Day" advises their female readers on ways to save money by buying needed car parts from a wrecking yard. It's not that most women will be able to take a wrench and swap out the old part for a new one, though some certainly can, but it's that if your mechanic says you need, say, a new starter motor, buying one from a wrecking yard can save you anywhere from 50% to 80% of the cost of a new one. Ask him if he'll put it on if you buy it. Starting motors are good buys from wrecking yards; if a car has been totaled in a rear-end collision, chances are the starting motor wasn't affected by the crash, and is perfectly good. The markup on replacement parts from dealers and auto supply stores can be quite high. It was once estimated that if you took a $20,000 car and built an exact replica from parts bought over the counter, you'd be spending about $250,000. If you can buy a serviceable and safe part from a wrecking yard for much less, why not?' Some parts, unless you're an expert mechanic, shouldn't be bought from wrecking yards. Example; anything having to do with brakes, suspension, safety or steering. You want to be sure these parts are new and fully safe and operational. Another advantage to shopping at a wrecking yard: if they don't have the part on hand, they can use their network to find a yard nearby that has the part, and get it for you. Body parts, such as a door handle or a bumper where you won't need to match paint, are also safe to buy. Who cares what happened to the rest of the car, as long as these parts are OK? If you live in winter areas where you need snow tires, buy two wheels the exact same size as your wheels, then mount the snow tires on them. When it's time to swap out your regular tires for the snow tires, or vice-versa, having them already mounted will save you the annual fees of re-mounting the tires on the rims and having them re-balanced. You can buy wheels (not tires) for about 20% of what you'd pay for new ones from a dealer. Source: "Woman's Day" magazine. |
