About 'window lift motor'-What Is the Definition of Bummer
The Glenspean Lodge is a small luxury hotel that was originally a hunting lodge for the rich and famous in the Scottish highlands. According to the hotel website, it was once part of a large estate owned by Laird Macintosh of Macintosh, whose portrait hangs prominently in the hotel lobby. During the 1920's and 1930's the hunting lodge was visited by many well-known people, including King Edward VII. Nowadays it is part of the Best Western Hotel chain, but it is certainly not a cookie cutter property. It is about 12 miles outside Fort William proper and accessible only by motor vehicle. Fort William is the "gateway to the highlands" and the jumping off point for the Jacobite Steam Train (also known as the Harry Potter train, since it was made famous in the Harry Potter films). Fort William is also at the foot of Scotland's highest peak and a popular site for hiking and skiing-Ben Nevis. Hunting Lodge Atmosphere The Lodge oozes with atmosphere, from the crunchy gravel driveway to the landscaped grounds, the elegant lobby, grand staircase, and fourteen tastefully decorated rooms-each with en suite facilities. Our double room had cream-colored French provincial furniture, a window seat, and a spectacular view of Ben Nevis. And unlike any other hotel room we had experienced on the trip, it was huge. The bed was large and very comfortable. Our twin room was around the corner, had only a small window with minimal view and was right over the kitchen. The hotel website notes that each room is unique, including a turret room, several four poster rooms, and the Braveheart Suite (an homage to the Mel Gibson movie filmed nearby). When Edward VII stayed there, it must have had a different label. In the lobby, bar and less formal restaurant, dark wood and rich fabrics dominate. The hunting lodge theme extended to some stuffed birds in glass cases, which I tried to ignore. The lodge prides itself on local foods and has won awards. We ate there only once under rushed circumstances so I do not feel able to comment on the food. In fact we never ate in the award-winning Nevis View Restaurant, which was grand, elegant, and empty, even on a Saturday evening in peak tourist season with the hotel fully booked. That was a mystery. Other Amenities The hotel advertises itself as a venue for weddings and receptions and indeed it would be an atmospheric backdrop for a Scottish wedding with kilts and a bagpiper. The size of the hotel would be perfect for housing the wedding party. The hotel also has a "snookers room" (billiards), a sauna and hot tub, and a small fitness center. We did not actually use any of those facilities. One of the few weaknesses of this hotel was the lack of any elevator or lift. A person unable to climb stairs could not be accommodated. (I asked about this and was told it would be prohibitively expensive to retrofit this hunting lodge with an elevator.) Service was excellent throughout our stay. It almost felt like visiting someone's (large) private home. I would love to stay at this hotel again some day. If you are in this vicinity and have a rental car, you should consider staying at the Glenspean Lodge.
