               Common               extended               warranty               misunderstandings
The               first               thing               a               finance               manager               will               say               is               that               if               you               do               not               purchase               an               extended               warranty               at               the               time               of               sale,               you               can               not               purchase               a               warranty.

That               is               simply               not               true.

What               he               means               is               you               can               not               purchase               an               extended               warranty               from               him               and               he               will               not               make               a               commission.

If               you               purchase               a               new               vehicle,               the               manufacturer               will               gladly               sell               you               one               of               their               warranties               as               long               as               you               purchase               before               the               initial               3               years,               36,000               mile               period.

Then               the               finance               manager               will               tell               you               that               you               can               not               finance               those               contracts.

Chrysler               will               finance               any               of               their               extended               warranties               for               up               to               24               months               at               zero               percent               interest.

Even               if               you               choose               to               not               buy               directly               from               the               manufacturer,               there               are               hundreds               of               extended               warranty               companies               who               will               be               delighted               to               sell               you               their               extended               warranty               and               even               finance               it.
There               is               no               such               thing               as               bumper-to-bumper               extended               warranties.

That               is               another               phrase               the               finance               manager               will               say.

The               truth               is               no               warranty,               factory               or               otherwise,               will               cover               wear               and               tear               items               such               as               an               alignment,               brakes,               tires,               hoses,               etc.

past               the               vehicle's               first               twelve               months               or               twelve               thousand               miles.

Also,               when               purchasing               an               extended               warranty               for               a               new               vehicle               or               one               under               factory               warranty,               the               length               of               coverage               begins               at               the               vehicle's               in-service               date.

That               means               that               if               you               purchase               an               extended               warranty               of               72               months               or               75,000               thousand               miles               and               the               vehicle               was               originally               sold               two               years               earlier               and               has               28,000               miles               you've               only               purchased               48               months               or               47,000               miles               of               coverage.
               What               extended               warranty               to               choose
There               are               so               many               combinations               to               make               out               of               extended               warranties               it               is               difficult               to               make               a               decision.

Here               are               a               few               criteria               I               use               when               making               my               decision.

First,               I               choose               a               plan               that               fits               my               driving               habits.

The               first               plan               the               finance               manager               presents               to               you               will               probably               be               for               84               months               and               100,000               miles               and               make               him               the               most               money.

But               what               if               you               plan               to               trade               in               two               or               three               years?

What               if               you               drive               24,000               miles               a               year?

You               don't               need               a               seven               year               extended               warranty.

Figure               out               what               your               driving               habits               are               and               ask               the               finance               manager               to               only               show               you               the               plans               that               are               in               line               with               your               parameters.

Then,               have               the               finance               manager               show               you               in               writing               what               you               receive               with               the               extended               warranty.

Roadside               assistance?

Car               rental?

Travel               reimbursement?

If               you               do               not               use               these,               then               ask               he               choose               a               package               without               these               items.

There               are               usually               three               basic               packages               :               powertrain,               basic               and               comprehensive.

Powertrain               coverage               will               cover               only               the               motor,               transmission,               differential               and               transfer               case               if               it               is               a               four-wheel               drive               vehicle.

Most               manufacturers               will               cover               these               items               for               up               to               100,000               miles               so               you're               paying               for               almost               nothing.

Basic               coverage               covers               many               more               items,               usually               in               the               thousands               and               the               cost               difference               is               minimal               for               the               coverage.

This               is               the               coverage               I               recommend               just               because               it               is               the               most               cost               effective               and               offers               the               best               coverage.

Comprehensive               coverage               is               mostly               offered               on               new               vehicles               and               it               extends               the               vehicle's               initial               factory               warranty               up               to               the               period               purchased.

This               means               that               a               vehicle               with               three               years               36,000               miles               factory               warranty               can               have               that               warranty               extended               for               up               to               84               months               or               100,000.

The               coverage               is               excellent               but               the               consumer               is               paying               for               car               rental               and               travel               reimbursement               and               no               additional               coverage               for               the               the               initial               ownership               period               and               the               cost               increase               is               dramatic.
The               best               advice               I               can               give               is               to               take               your               time               deciding               if               you'll               buy               and               extended               warranty               and               which               one.

If               the               finance               manager               wants               to               make               a               commission,               he'll               let               you               sleep               on               it.

Make               absolutely               sure               you               know               what               coverage               you               are               buying               and               that               coverage               suits               you               and               your               vehicle.
