A vehicle purchase is most people's second largest investment behind the purchase of a home. We've all been in the finance manager's office ready to sign paperwork when he asks about purchasing an extended warranty for the vehicle. Most consumers misunderstand extended warranties and do not even know what will be warrantied by the service contract. The finance manager usually only tells the consumer that the vehicle will be warrantied for a certain number of months and miles, rarely being specific as to parts and repair coverage. Since a vehicle is most people's second largest investment behind the purchase of a home, it is important to know if and when to purchase a warranty for that investment as well what coverage is being purchased. I've worked as a Finance Manager at a Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealership and in my time in the position I learned the ins and outs of vehicle warranties and the better ways to purchase the warranties. Purchasing warranty for new and pre-owned vehicles Consumers should purchase an extended warranty for any pre-owned vehicle that is out of factory warranty as long as the coverage and price are right. It would be foolish to purchase a vehicle with 60,000 miles, finance it for three or four years and not have an extended warranty for repairs. Unless you are independently wealthy, according to Autos.com even a window motor repair can run over $500 which is usually equal or more than the monthly payment. On new vehicles, warranties get a little trickier. The main rule I adhere to is to not finance the warranty with the vehicle. Main reason is that the warranty will only add negative value if you decide to trade out of it in the future. Other than that, there is not much that an extended warranty can offer for a brand new vehicle that the consumer can not purchase at a later date. Common extended warranty misunderstandings The first thing a finance manager will say is that if you do not purchase an extended warranty at the time of sale, you can not purchase a warranty. That is simply not true. What he means is you can not purchase an extended warranty from him and he will not make a commission. If you purchase a new vehicle, the manufacturer will gladly sell you one of their warranties as long as you purchase before the initial 3 years, 36,000 mile period. Then the finance manager will tell you that you can not finance those contracts. Chrysler will finance any of their extended warranties for up to 24 months at zero percent interest. Even if you choose to not buy directly from the manufacturer, there are hundreds of extended warranty companies who will be delighted to sell you their extended warranty and even finance it. There is no such thing as bumper-to-bumper extended warranties. That is another phrase the finance manager will say. The truth is no warranty, factory or otherwise, will cover wear and tear items such as an alignment, brakes, tires, hoses, etc. past the vehicle's first twelve months or twelve thousand miles. Also, when purchasing an extended warranty for a new vehicle or one under factory warranty, the length of coverage begins at the vehicle's in-service date. That means that if you purchase an extended warranty of 72 months or 75,000 thousand miles and the vehicle was originally sold two years earlier and has 28,000 miles you've only purchased 48 months or 47,000 miles of coverage. What extended warranty to choose There are so many combinations to make out of extended warranties it is difficult to make a decision. Here are a few criteria I use when making my decision. First, I choose a plan that fits my driving habits. The first plan the finance manager presents to you will probably be for 84 months and 100,000 miles and make him the most money. But what if you plan to trade in two or three years? What if you drive 24,000 miles a year? You don't need a seven year extended warranty. Figure out what your driving habits are and ask the finance manager to only show you the plans that are in line with your parameters. Then, have the finance manager show you in writing what you receive with the extended warranty. Roadside assistance? Car rental? Travel reimbursement? If you do not use these, then ask he choose a package without these items. There are usually three basic packages : powertrain, basic and comprehensive. Powertrain coverage will cover only the motor, transmission, differential and transfer case if it is a four-wheel drive vehicle. Most manufacturers will cover these items for up to 100,000 miles so you're paying for almost nothing. Basic coverage covers many more items, usually in the thousands and the cost difference is minimal for the coverage. This is the coverage I recommend just because it is the most cost effective and offers the best coverage. Comprehensive coverage is mostly offered on new vehicles and it extends the vehicle's initial factory warranty up to the period purchased. This means that a vehicle with three years 36,000 miles factory warranty can have that warranty extended for up to 84 months or 100,000. The coverage is excellent but the consumer is paying for car rental and travel reimbursement and no additional coverage for the the initial ownership period and the cost increase is dramatic. The best advice I can give is to take your time deciding if you'll buy and extended warranty and which one. If the finance manager wants to make a commission, he'll let you sleep on it. Make absolutely sure you know what coverage you are buying and that coverage suits you and your vehicle. "Average Cost to fix a window regulator", www.autos.com "Chrysler Service Contracts" |
